I've been working on this Lizard City painting for a little over a week now. It's starting to drag on a bit and I suuuure thought I'd be done in time for this week's update, but I'm not. So instead I'll tell you a bit about the process I'm going through with developing this piece.
Above you have the initial sketch; this is where all the fresh new ideas burst onto the stage. At this point I have no concept or bearing of what parts of this drawing I'm going to regret later, all I'm worried about is composition. This part of the painting is the fun part where all my hopes and dreams are still in tact.
Dreams now bruised, but not excessively damaged, above you'l see the value painting. My goal for this painting is to gain a better understand of light and value in composition, the value study was extremely important. I'm still developing the main setting for Lizard City, but at this point I know the architecture is largely brick. Piping is wiry and jagged, which reflects the motion of the lizards themselves.
I don't know a lot about Lizard City right now, but I do know that "Lizard City" isn't really a city, and going there is more of a euphemism for something. And that our protagonist is "going to Lizard City".

This final snapshot is where I am with this painting right now. Close enough that I can almost see what it will be like when it's finished, but far enough away that I'm not ready to cram through the rest to get the finished piece up for this post. I've added more piping to try to direct the eye toward our lizard and his wagon.
